Josh has been discharged, and we are at my parents now. Yay! Hopefully he'll feel well enough to go home for reals to GA this weekend.

Thanks for all the well wishes and thoughts. Y'all are awesome.

Josh is still in the hospital. Hopefully he will be able to go home on Thursday, but we'll see. He's still got the drain in, he's still running a fever, and his pain is of a greater degree than we both expected at this stage in the process. I don't think we could effectively manage his pain if they discharged him tomorrow, so another day is for the best. I really hope we get to go home on Thursday, though.

I am reminded once again by what a blessing good doctors and nurses are and what a frustration and source of anger poor, inept, and indifferent health care workers can be. We've seen examples of both during Josh's hospital stay (which is par for the course for a stay of any length of time), and it is remarkable what a difference small acts of kindness make and how much relief patients can get from competence and caring. Caring for a sicked loved one or being sick yourself is already an exercise in frustration. You are powerless, at the mercy of the vagaries of your body and biological forces which you may or may not understand very well. You are also at the mercy of the people who are charged with your care--the doctors who get to say what you can eat and when and what sorts of medicine you can have and when and the nurses who implement those orders and monitor your condition. I am extremely grateful for the nurses we've had who've exhibited the gold standard of nursing that my mother has taught for 39 years, and I would like to wring the neck of the nurses who have made it very clear that Josh's comfort is not their priority (yes, Megan-on-the-dayshift, I'm talking to you. quit flipping your hair, Blondie, and get my husband his freaking pain pills!).

On to Clan of the Cave Bear!

Josh didn't die of appendicitis, but I guess it was pretty close since it took us three days to figure out what was going on. He's in the hospital now; made it through surgery. They were able to do it laproscopically, and it didn't rupture, but it was super infected, so he's got a drain, and he'll be in the hospital for at least two more days. I have never seen in him such pain, y'all, not even when he almost hacked his leg off with the lawn mower. It just about killed me to watch him in such pain; it was physically exhausting. Don't know how much I'll be around; have to check out the hospital wifi. Send good vibes, please. My baby is really, really sick.

May. 26th, 2012 @ 11:11 pm We arrived safely in MS on Friday, and already I'm having these
inuyasha: kagome by rhye
"only here" kinda moments.

My mother read a verse from Song of Songs aloud to us from three different Biblical translations and was forced to conclude that in none of them did the comparison of the Beloved to a mare come out very flatteringly from the perspective of a modern audience.

I was stoked to find a jar of beef jerky in the pantry but less than stoked when a stick crumbled to dust in my mouth at which point I saw that it had expired in 2005. WTF, Lorraine?! This is not your first rodeo. Always check the dates in this house.

I have been bullied by my dad (in front of my child, no less) into going to church with them tomorrow, and Josh is possibly dying of appendicitis. We're monitoring his symptoms. I'll let y'all know.

In Avengers related Emma cuteness, Emma and I had gotten tired of playing Inuyasha in the pool (guess who *always* has to be Naraku?) and decided to play Avengers instead.

Emma said, "You be Black Widow, Mom, and I'll be Captain America."

Just then, my mom came out on the porch, so I said, "What about Mimi?"

Emma said, "She can be Hulk."

I quickly shushed her because I thought Mimi might find that less flattering than being compared to a mare in Pharoh's army. "Okay," Emma said while rolling her eyes. "What about Tony Stark's grandmother?"

When I got married in 2001, I shit y'all not--the state of Mississippi gave us a Hefty bag full of goodies when we filed our marriage license. The special gifts that our well meaning state intended to imbue our marriage with lifelong happiness included samples of cleaning supplies and personal hygiene products, coupons for various items with which a new housekeeper might like to stock her pantry, and this glorious book. I realized right then and there who my conservative state held responsible for keeping my marriage alive. That's right, folks. Me. The wifely one. If I could only keep the toilet clean, brush my teeth regularly, and motivate myself to wear deodorant, Josh and I would be off to a good start. But if all these marriage aids failed, I still had Amanda Stevens on my side.

See, in this Harlequin Intrigue novel, "Grace Drummond was between a rock and a hard place--and both were Brady Morgan!" Notice the exclamation point, my friends. Grace and Brady come together in a veritable barrage of exclamation points. While riding in the car, Grace notes that Brady's "coat smelled of mountain air and wood smoke, and Grace, city-born and raised, was surprised to find that the scent stirred something primal and feminine inside her." This tip would come in useful for me; if I ever needed to feel primal and feminine (like a Mama Grizzly, maybe), a mere whiff of Josh's clothes after a bonfire should do the trick. At the end of this book, Grace, who has to go into the witness protection program, tests out her new name on Brady, but ultimately pronounces that all she's "interested in being is Mrs. Brady Morgan." This last page kinda stumped me, y'all, as I have never been Mrs. Nobody and wasn't about to start just because I walked down the aisle. I figured if Josh and I role-played FBI agent and reporter in custody for long enough though, I might overcome my deficiencies. LOL

This book is hardly fit for burning, and yet I keep it in pride of place and in (as Emma would say) ABC order with the other tomes on the bookshelf. Who knows what might happen to my marriage if I didn't? :)

So, we watched Avengers over the weekend and X-Men: First Class tonight on HBO, and I am left with these conclusions:

1. I want slash of Screamy Guy and Firebendy guy liek whoa.

2. Black Widow pwns my soul. I loved every single second she was onscreen. I want her to be onscreen more. I want her to emotionally manipulate me. I want to go shopping with her for matching leather pantsuits. OMG I WANT HER HAIR!!!!!!!

3. I want to watch the movie where baby!Picard and baby!Gandalf cry into each other's mouths like Spongebob and Patrick.

4. Why didn't none of y'all tell me how sad X-Men is? Why didn't I watch it in the theater? Why does it star naughty!Tinkerbell?

5. We took Emma to see Avengers with us. On leaving the theater, she informed me that it is "the best movie ever, we must buy it, Hulk is my favorite, followed by Captain America, followed by Iron Man, and this is the best movie ever, Mom, let's buy it. Now."

6. If Thor consists of Wincestful, teary emo eyes between the brothers as does Avengers, then I should have watched that movie in the theater as well, Princess Amidala aside.

REC ME REC ME REC ME REC ME REC ME REC ME, YES YES YES YES YES!! :)

May. 22nd, 2012 @ 04:12 pm 100 Things Post #4: Writing Without Teachers by Peter Elbow
writer by sukibluefiction
Tags:
This is the first writing manual I ever encountered. I first read it as part of the curriculum for a summer camp for writers that I attended as a middle schooler. I had to read it again in grad school in a class on pedagogy. Now, I cringe when I read this book (and that feeling is absolutely reflected in the marginalia which dates from the grad school reading experience). It's definitely a hippy-dippy, granola, artsy-fartsy approach to writing and teaching writing that is extremely difficult to implement in an actual academic setting (and, say, not a summer camp or writing institute type experience).

I do not think of writing as cooking (really, Elbow?), but I'll give him the growing metaphor, and that last one is what meant so much to me as a adolescent writer. Elbow's work appealed to me first because its very premise is that you can become a good writer without the tutelage of a teacher, and like most other adolescents, I was totally on board with the idea that I didn't need the instruction of any of the authority figures in my life to be completely awesome. I kinda have issues with his pedagogy now that I've been teaching college writing classes for more than a decade, but I have to give the man credit where credit is due. Although writing pedagogy has moved on since 1973, a great deal of what Elbow preaches (and this is totally a sermon) in this book is very good advice and has informed the way we continue to teach writing in higher education (I'm thinking of peer review of student essays in particular here).

Writing without Teachers is dated, but for a long time, it was my go-to writer's block destroyer. If you're interested in the evolution of the pedagogy of writing, or if you're interested in a quick read that's sprinkled through with concrete writing suggestions, I'd recommend this book.

I absolutely adore this book. I've read it upwards of twenty times. I love it so much that I made it the central wooing device in my Jensen/Jared college AU.

It's one of my favorite books to teach, too. Students respond to so many elements in this novel--the unreliable narrators, the gothic conventions, the soulmates, the tragic love story, the necrophilia! We get to talk about doing it *and* digging up your dead honey when I teach this novel; it's an educator's dream.

Since this is a book I have read consistently at least once a year since I was 15, I've been able to chart my reactions to the text as time as passed. I write in the books I cared about, and so much of the joy of re-reading this book to me is reading the progression of marginalia. Is there a word for commenting on your own commentary? LOL I love how the handwriting matures, how many times I wrote, "What an ass," next to something Heathcliff does. I love how every time I read this book, I find something different, some nuance that missed all the other times.

I think my favorite aspect of this book is it's discussion of identity and the impact love has on self-hood. For Cathy and Heathcliff, love is dangerous. It risks self-dissolution. It is soul-subsuming, and it leads to madness. It leads to death. "Nelly, I am Heathcliff!" Cathy cries, and she means it in that way that every sixteen year old who feels her soul thrum to the magnetic resonance of another's means it, when she believes that she is close enough to another person that they are but extensions of one another's bodies--a single soul inhabiting separate flesh.

Unfortunately, Cathy kinda forgets to tell Heathcliff that they're soulmates yo and marries another dude. Heathcliff is not impressed.

And, ooh oooh! The puns. Penistone Crag, anybody? Bridle hook?

I think this is one of the most accessible 19th-century novels, and if you haven't read it, I'd suggest giving it a go.

As you all know, I've been feeling a bit disconnected from fandom lately, and I thought this might be a good way to commit myself to a little more interaction.

{Take the 100 Things challenge!}

So, looks like you guys want me to talk about books (although fanfic was the runner up). Just to frame how I'll be doing this--I will be talking about 100 books that have been important to me in some way. This won't necessarily be a favorites list; some of these books were important to me during specific periods of time and now hold no interest for me. It's also definitely not meant to be a "best of" list either; some of the books I'll be blogging about were never in the running for the Booker Prize. LOL

star trek: TNG Enterprise by jrmoom
Now that Remix has been live for a million years, I can finally get around to posting a link to my story and linking you guys to the awesome remix that was written for me.

I wrote Poker Face (the she can read you remix). It's ST:TNG Deanna-centric gen, and I strongly recommend that you read the fabulous ficlet on which it is based before you read the story.

TardisIsTheOnlyWayToTravel wrote the fantastic Apple Candy (the fools rush in remix) which I think is absolutely wonderful. The story is Kirk/Spock/Uhura and rated PG-13ish. I love the wry humor and the bigger role given to Bones in the remix. This remix is much more fun of a read than my original which skews a bit more to the angsty. Once again, I feel like I won remix. :)

1. Who wants to talk about Samurai Champloo?

2. When we're done watching Inuyasha, we're gonna watch Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple with Emma. Any recs for what anime we watch after that? (Remember she's 9.)

3. How closely does the Inuyasha TV show follow the manga? Emma had a conniption fit when she realized Inuyasha comes in book form. WITH WORDS!

4. Josh and I are more than half-way done with Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex. Where's the fandom? There's sixteen fics on AO3. Whhhhhhhhhhhy? This show is so amazing. I already want to write Togusa fic.

5. Next we are (re)watching Fullmetal Alchemist. I watched some back in the day, and Josh watched more. I'm excited. All I remember is the the echoing sound of, "Brother!" LOL, but I'm excited.

6. Finally reading Year of the Flood. Who else wants to make out with Margaret Atwood?

club_joss by chocgood84
I had serious reservations about seeing this movie.

I am a weenie. A big ole weenie.

I have been afraid of the dark and of monsters for, oh, almost 33 years. Since I'm about to hit my Jesus year, that gives you a bit of perspective on the degree of my fraidy-catness.

I spent most of my adolescent nights swaddled in a heavy comforter with only a tiny breathing hole for my mouth, none of my rank and sweating flesh exposed to the night air and the questing teeth of evil, evil vampires. For the most part, I can approximate a grown-up these days, but all bets are off if I watch a scary movie. Guess who does not like to get up 6 times a night to go to the bathroom with me. That's right. It's Josh.

I forewent seeing Daniel Radcliffe in a waistcoat because I knew that movie would scare the shit out of me.

So, I am pleased to say that while deeply amusing, Cabin in the Woods is not remotely scary. :)

Totally spoilers, yo; like, srsly, if you plan to see the movie don't read because it's best viewed unspoiled )

3. Even though I went to school at Ole Miss, I'd never read much Barry Hannah. A colleague who considered him a close friend and mentor gave me a couple short stories. I read one of them, and while I didn't care for it all that much, I am considering changing the title of this journal to "Hoisting the nipplements of my wayout enhooterment" as a consequence. Thoughts?

Who wants to talk about

a. last night's Game of Thrones
b. Inuyasha
c. Friedman's Magister series (still in the middle of the first book)
d. what anime we should watch next with Emma once Inuyasha is over
e. Bridesmaids (watched and kinda went meh)

In the past fourteen days, I have written 48 pages on my dissertation, had a conference proposal accepted, and lost 6 lbs (well that took more like 3 weeks LOL). I'm teaching two ten week classes that meet for the final time next Wednesday. Six extra hours a week to write for the rest of the semester! Yay!

I might just make friends with 2012 after all.
